TOUCAN

A sports model with a difference! Loosely based on the full size ‘Tucano’ trainer used by many airforces worldwide, the Toucan is designed to be a sports model for the average club flier looking for a combination of performance without breaking the bank balance.

Using a combination of mid-wing design and low weight, the Toucan is both forgiving and exciting. The dihedral wing angle provides the stability required when progressing from a high wing trainer and the wing section allows you to start exploring faster speeds and early aerobatics.

Power is provided by a standard 400 motor and direct-drive propeller. This is an economic combination that, when mated to a seven cell battery pack, packs a surprising performance. The kit does not include any of the drive-train components, but your local shop will be happy to advise about the best combinations to suit your pocket. The selection of power will often dictate the flight duration and hence the battery requirement. The latest 1100mAh 2/3A Nimh cells are a good combination for the Toucan by providing low weight and significant flight times. A 400 motor should only require a 10A speed controller but check with the motor manufacturer before making this purchase decision.

As the Toucan is likely to be your second model, the design has been kept simple to construct by the extensive use of sheet CNC components that interlock for in-the-hand building. We have used both Lite-Ply and balsa to ensure the correct weight and strength distribution combined with assembly simplicity. Ailerons have been omitted for ease of construction, but control response remains positive from the highly effective rudder. The wings have been designed for slightly faster flight while retaining good low speed characteristics for landing but remember, she’s not a high wing trainer and a new technique will need to be learnt.

Control is via three channels and two servos. Take care to select mini R/C gear so that overall weight is minimised. This has the added bonus of making installation easier as well.

The Toucan’s flight performance offers the right balance of training and excitement that should be expected of a second model. Add to that stunning, modern good looks and you can see why she’s become a firm favourite amongst electric fliers.
